Make Plans to Attend SeniorSpa in April

This April, NC Massage School is pleased to host a two-day class entitled SeniorSpa. This two-part class, which offers up to 14 CEs, provides attendees with the skills and knowledge they need to better serve elderly patients and clients.

Seniors are a growing demographic for the massage therapist. As the population continues to age and medical technology increases the lifespan for the average American, seniors are turning to massage therapy to help with recovery after surgery, general pain control and simple quality of life. These individuals require specialized care that the massage therapist needs to learn, and that is why North Carolina Massage School is hosting this continue education class.

Sheila Alexander to Teach the Class

SeniorSpa will be taught by Sheila Alexander, licensed North Carolina massage therapist. Sheila graduated from SunCoast School of Natural Health in 1993 and currently works for The Pines at Davidson, where she developed a massage program for the residents in 2004. Her passion for helping seniors through massage therapy began when she cared for her parents as they suffered through Alzheimer’s and cancer.

Sheila’s expertise in the field of senior car has earned her recognition in the massage therapy world. She was featured in the Charlotte Observer and on NBC-TV for her skills as a massage therapist. She brings those skills to the classroom for the SeniorSpa courses.

The Details

SeniorSpa is a two-day class that begins at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, April 18. The first day’s sessions run until 6:00 p.m. Part 1 will cover:

  • Identifying body types for seniors
  • Massage techniques for seniors in hospital beds, chairs and wheelchairs
  • Considerations for the skin and body health related to seniors
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Moist heat therapy
  • Aromatherapy

Part 1 is available as a stand-alone class worth seven CEs, or it can be taken with Part 2 for the full 14 credits.

The second day of the course, which is also worth seven CEs, requires completion of part one. The second part, which takes place Saturday April 19 at 2:00 until 9:00, will cover:

  • Positioning techniques that reduce fatigue for the geriatric client
  • Routines for massaging seniors on tables, in chares or in hospital beds
  • Back exfoliation techniques
  • Marketing concepts
  • Help with completion of forms for senior care

Because Part 2 is more hands-on than Part 1, students must bring a set of sheets, two pillows with extra cases, a hand towel, two washcloths and massage cream.

Cost for the entire weekend is $300, or $150 per session. Students who register prior to April 11 receive a $25 discount. The class is open to professional therapists or beginners who are well skilled in the field, but not necessarily in full practice yet. Register today to take advantage of the discount!
